Every day, 1,000 women are violently assaulted across Australia, and one in three women will be assaulted or abused in their lifetime. Globally, up to six out of every ten women experience physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime.
Violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread violations of human rights. It can include physical, sexual, psychological and economic abuse, and it cuts across boundaries of age, race, culture, wealth and geography. It takes place in the home, on the streets, in schools, the workplace, in farm fields, refugee camps, and during conflicts and crises.
These women are our mothers, our girlfriends, our wives, our daughters, our colleagues and our friends. How have we allowed this to occur?
In Australia and around the world, the White Ribbon Campaign asks men to speak out and take the oath, swearing never to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women.
