Queenslanders affected by domestic and family violence will continue to be able to pick up the phone to get expert advice or counselling.

Community Services Minister Karen Struthers announced today the organisation which runs the Domestic and Family Violence Helpline has received funding to operate the service.
Ms Struthers said DVConnect Ltd would receive Queensland Government funding of $1.88 million to continue its vital work providing the counselling, information and referral service for another three years.
She also announced additional one-off funds of $279,000 for 12 months to help address increased client costs and demand following the natural disasters.
“In the past 12 months, DVConnect received 51,208 calls for assistance,” Ms Struthers said.
“Domestic and family violence is of great concern to the Bligh Government and we are determined to provide better protection for people.
“We have introduced new legislation to par liament which represents the first major overhaul of Queensland’s domestic and family violence legislation in 20 years.”
Ms Struthers said the Domestic and Family Violence Protection Bill 2011 included proposed changes to improve the safety and protection of people affected by domestic and family violence and to reduce the exposure of children to this type of violence.
“This draft bill, which has been out for public comment, proposes to introduce police issued protection notices that would provide immediate protection of victims by holding perpetrators immediately accountable for their actions,” she said.
“The bill also puts forward increased penalties for breaking domestic violence orders.”
